Pandas are Proof that Being Likable is More Important than Being Talented
Let’s be real. Pandas are kinda lazy. But we don’t care.
Once during a job interview, I was asked what animal I would like to be. I answered a panda. Not because they are adorable and cuddly, but because they’ve survived even though they really should be extinct by now.
Think about it. Nearly a panda’s entire diet consists of bamboo, which has low nutritional value (requiring them to consume a massive amount) and is constantly threatened by habitat destruction.
Furthermore, pandas don’t reproduce often. Whether in captivity or the wild, their species have a famously low libido. Females are fertile only a few days a year, and even then, they seem utterly uninterested in mating. If you don’t believe me, google “panda mating funny” [NSFW].
Finally, let’s face it. Pandas are kind of lazy. Unlike the hardworking honeybee or the talented beaver, pandas loll around all day, leisurely chomping on their bamboo. I suppose another way to look at it is that they know how to enjoy the present moment.
Basically, if pandas went extinct, it’d be their own dang fault.
Nevertheless, we are obsessed with these lovable creatures, and numerous organizations are devoted to ensuring their survival. #savethepandas
