The Hippocratic Oath calls upon physicians to “do no harm” to a patient. Every new physician must take this oath. Indeed, this centuries-old code of ethics is the very foundation of the medical profession.

Richard J. Schmidt, a former American doctor, grossly disregarded his sacred vow when he knowingly injected his lover and former colleague, Janice Trahan, with HIV. The fact that someone would do something so diabolical is disturbing enough, but the fact that a respectable medical doctor was responsible is truly frightening.

Richard and Janice’s relationship

Richard and Janice first met in the 1980s while working at the same hospital in Lafayette, Louisiana. Initially, their relationship was purely professional. Janice, a newly graduated nurse, was attracted to Richard’s intelligence and brilliance as a doctor. As both Richard and Janice were married with children, it seemed a romance would be off-limits.
