Every Halloween, I am reminded of Hyun Jong “Cindy” Song, a college student who disappeared on Halloween night almost twenty years ago, never to be seen again.

In 2001, I was a sophomore at Penn State University. Cindy was a senior and set to graduate that December. I vividly remembered this case and seeing the now-ubiquitous photo of a smiling Cindy in her bunny costume plastered all over campus. As a South Korean female with roughly the same age, height, and body type as Cindy, I naturally felt connected to the victim and shuddered at the thought that it could have been me.

The puzzling case eventually involved a psychic, a possible sighting 200 miles away from Penn State, and a possible connection to a serial killer. But two decades later, the haunting question remains: What happened to Cindy Song?

Wednesday night, October 31, 2001

Cindy came to America from South Korea when she was 15-years old to further her education. Ever the responsible student, she typically didn’t party during the week. But Halloween fell on a Wednesday that year, and she couldn’t resist going out with her two girlfriends to Players Nite Club, a popular hangout spot. Cindy danced the night away…
