Someone out there will not like your content and will let you know it. That’s ok.
I have a motivational YouTube channel called Unbury that Badass. I remember getting my first mean comment on one of my videos in 2019. “Oh my god, this chick is SO annoying.” *vomit emoji*
My first reaction upon reading the comment was, “Wow, this person really doesn’t like me.” Rather than being upset, I was fascinated and amused that a total stranger could be so offended by my mere existence (and by a motivational video, no less).
My second reaction was, “Yay, this means people are watching my content!” :)
It’s scary to make yourself vulnerable and put yourself out there. Part of my initial hesitation to do so was because of the feedback I’d receive. Would people “like” it?
If you are like me and you are holding back on sharing your creations with the world because you’re afraid of the public reaction, I’m here to break it to you: there is someone out there who won’t understand it, who won’t appreciate it, and who just won’t like it. This extends not just to your content but also your choices.
Getting that first mean comment was a blessing. The world didn’t end. I didn’t collapse and die. I read the comment, filed it under “what others think of me is none of my business,” and have continued creating content that brings me joy and fills me with purpose.
The only way to find your voice is to use it. It’d be a shame to stop using your voice because of the few individuals who don’t like what you have to say.
